Alcohol Addiction: Will-Power Won't Work

Alcohol addiction is a serious disease that is often underestimated in our country. This debilitating affliction requires intensive alcohol addiction treatment if the alcoholic is ever to live a normal, healthy life again.

While everyone can see plainly that drug addiction is a problem, many mistakenly put alcohol addiction in its own category, as though it were less severe or dangerous as drug addiction. This is not so! People addicted to alcohol, known commonly as alcoholics, can just as easily die from their addiction as someone addicted to cocaine. We need to get rid of our old thinking that alcohol addiction is just some moral weakness that can be cured with “good, old-fashioned will power,” because it cannot. It requires mental and physical alcoholism treatment the same way cocaine addiction requires drug addiction treatment. If a late-stage alcoholic goes long enough without alcoholism treatment, he is just as likely to die a painful, agonizing death as any long-term drug addict.

If you are truly suffering from alcohol addiction, no amount of will power will cure you, just as will power cannot cure someone suffering from leukemia. You’ll need alcohol addiction treatment to function properly again. Once you accept this and take the necessary steps, you can feel confident that you’re taking control of your life again. After accepting alcoholism treatment and making your best effort to get better every day, you’ll be getting your life back on track.

At the turn of the last century and into the early 1930s, alcohol addiction was seen as much more of a physical affliction than a moral sin. People could freely seek alcoholism treatment just by admitting themselves to most hospitals. Sometime during the Prohibition Era, however, views towards alcohol addiction changed to believe that alcoholism was a sin, a moral bent that could be changed with religious and moral convictions.

Slowly but surely, we as a nation are getting on the right track again, and alcoholism is once again viewed as a biological disease, something that only gets worse over time if not given proper alcohol addiction treatment. Thus, will-power will never cure alcoholism, but proper physical and mental alcoholism treatment will.
