Sand Play Therapy

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”
— Plato (429-347 B.C.)

Here at New Method Wellness’ Orange County rehab center, we believe in going to any lengths to discover each and every individual client’s needs and wants from a substance abuse treatment program. One of the ways that we assess and plan for addiction treatment is through sand play therapy.

Sand play therapy provides a way for clients to express their experiences and feelings through a natural, self-guided and self-healing process. Sand play is a form of counseling or psychotherapy that helps clients ease their way into recovery. This is form of therapy increases social integration, personal growth and development.

A sand play therapist observes a client playing with toys (miniatures, animals, archetypes, etc.) to determine the causes of drug and alcohol abuse challenges. The objects and patterns of play, as well as the willingness to interact with the therapist, can be used to understand the underlying rationale for addiction behavior both inside and outside the session.
