Addiction does not discriminate. It affects millions, but the journey to addiction can be particularly perilous for veterans. The experiences of military life, whether in active combat or dealing with the aftermath of service, can lead to significant trauma. These experiences often result in mental health issues such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression, which can drive individuals towards substance use as a coping mechanism.
Statistics show that nearly 1 in 15 veterans struggle with substance use disorders, and an overwhelming 76% of these individuals also meet the criteria for PTSD. Recognizing these unique challenges, New Method Wellness has developed a comprehensive program tailored to the needs of veterans.
The high rate of addiction among veterans is due to several factors, including exposure to trauma and difficulties in adjusting to civilian life. Many veterans witness extreme violence and face unique challenges upon returning home, leading to mental health issues and substance use as a coping mechanism.
Barriers such as homelessness and stigma further complicate the path to recovery. Approximately 10% of the homeless population in the U.S. are veterans, and many struggle with mental health and addiction. The stigma surrounding addiction and mental health can prevent veterans from seeking help.
